MacBook: my first looks

23rd May 2006Apple, Technical, Hardware, Technical

Since the “raster shift” has returned to my poor little Apple eMac after last weeks repairs, Apple Centre Bossina has promised me I get the full amount of money back when I trade it in and buy a new Mac. This afternoon (around 12:30PM) I visited their shop to find all but MacBooks. They were said to arrive later this week…
To my surprise someone in the Dutch Tweakers.net-forum posted around 04:00PM they had arrived, so I decided to take a quick peek around 6 o’clock, just before closing-time.
What I saw was better than I expected! I immediately fell for the white MacBook, on which the glossy screen just looked better than on the black one, and the same goes for the (white) power-cable aka Magsafe.
The screen-resolution of 1280×800 seemed just right and the reflections were not as bad as expected. I played a little with the built-in iSight-camera and PhotoBooth (impressive!) and made a little chat with the guys in the shop about how to use it in conjunction with the probable heat. Apple and / or Asustech probably made a misjudgment in applying the amount of “thermal paste” on the processors. As a guy on the MacNN-forum stated: It’s a CPU, not a sandwich!. Once again check out a post about this subject on Paul Stamatiou‘s blog.
It’s not a laptop, that’s for sure! So in the meantime, keep a close eye on the data posted on this new site called the “Intel Mac Temperature Database“.

Yeah, those first looks really made my day, but regarding the (probable) heat-issues I think I’ll have to sleep some more nights to make up my mind…

Got mine today, definitely not a LAPtop, but oh so sweet. Now as soon as I get it to fully authenticate against the 2003 Active Directory and Mail.app allows me to log on to Exchange at work I’ll be a happy guy.

Sweet indeed! I’ll check up on your blog to see if you have succeeded in authenticating.

(OT: turns out the AJAX-commenting is working, but I had to approve your comment… So it wasn’t the new WordPress nor the K2-svn-v361-build.)
