Comment spam drop

2nd Feb 2007Blogging, Technical

I’m not sure when I first added the IP-address 200.88.223.98 into my Apache-blocklist, but ever since I did the amount of tries to post comment-spam on this weblog has dropped considerably!
Looking at the comment spam counter at B10m’s it must have been app. 2 or 3 weeks ago.
Normally I don’t search for IP-addresses in Google, but I made an exception for this one. And it turns out the computer is being used as an open proxy or zombie computer. Checking some of the other results from the search, reveals what would have been posted if not stopped by Apache or the Spam Karma2-plugin I’ve installed on this blog…

Too bad this new theme is corrupting the comment spam-counter on this webpage (especially the photo-page), so that is why I’ve turned it off for the time being. This will of course affect the counter on B10m’s page, but since I’ve turned on this more aggressive IP-blocking, most comment spammers are kept out!

UPDATE: 20070203

I’ve dropped the recently installed Freshy-theme: I don’t have the time, deeper knowledge and energy to dive into the CSS-code to make the photo-page look right with a well-behaving sidebar, footer and spam-counter.
So it’s back to my adapted K2-theme… and B10m can still compare our two weblogs and their blocked spam! ;-)

UPDATE: 20070207

Another IP-address that’s good to block completely appears to be 216.32.88.42. The host on that address has tried more than 1600 times over the last 31 days and >125 times today to post comment-spam…

Ah yes, your new theme (which I like, by the way) doesn’t have spam info anymore. Is there any way I can still request this somehow though? I do would like to keep the counter up to date ;-)

Anyways, it turns out this IP address is not listed at all in my log files (yet). But your story made me look into this matter a little better. I’ll soon post the results of my analysis online ;-)

    Comment Spam – again…

Good blogger Bok noticed a major decrease in comment spam by blocking a single IP address. Of course, I had to see if this host was also spamming the heck out of my blog……
