Groningen rocks (too!)
Bruce wrote another marvelous piece about the city he and his wife are living in these days: Wellington, New Zealand.
I can hardly find the time nor want to copy all or some that he wrote about his town of choice (I agree with him on a lot of points, even though we only spent one day in Wellington on November 12th 2004), but to keep things in an equilibrium here’s something about my hometown: Groningen.
This week a report from the European Commission stated people in the city of Groningen are the most satisfied about their city out of 75 other European cities! The article the link points to is in Dutch, but for the English readers I’ll sum up the winning points:
- clean air
- health care
- money spent by local government
- security
- parks and the like
So after being elected in 2006 as the city with “de beste binnenstad” (the best city center) in the Netherlands, 2007 brings our town even higher on an international scale!
So indeed as they say in one of these TV-commercials: Er gaat niets boven Groningen! (“nothing tops Groningen”).
What a coincidence! This one just past by this evening, so I had to shoot it:

Good resolution on Google Earth Henk; you can see people in the square at Grote Markt, although I can’t quite tell if they’re on foot or bicycles! Lots of nearby geocaches too.
If you think GE has a good resolution, check out Microsoft’s maps.live.com.
Another idea stolen and enhanced the M$-way (and Windows only)…
So if you’re on Mac or Linux, check this screenshot of Grote Markt: http://www.flickr.com/photos/b-o-k/1009917214/
